Blogger’s Quilt Festival :: Baby Quilts - Out to Sea

Its time for Amy's Bloggers Quilt Festival - I love looking through all the inspiration of everyone who submits a quilt!  I wanted to get in on the fun!

A few months ago a client hired me to make a baby quilt.  She wanted a sea theme - boats, mermaids, seashells etc.  I had been wanting to make something from the Out to Sea line by Sarah Jane and this was the perfect excuse.

(iphone pic, sorry about the blurry) I had this quilt laying on my floor for a month trying to decide about the placement and how to fit all the pieces together.

I loved the bigger prints/panels.  The boats, the mermaids and the map had to be a focal point of the quilt.

Mixed in some patchwork and we had ourselves a quilt.  I was told just yesterday that it was given out and loved by the new owner.

I used the Waverly pattern for quilting.  This is one of my favorites as I think it has a look of waves and sky and adds great texture.  Especially with this minky backing!

High Street Baby Quilt

I have fallen in love with the High Street line by Moda.  I love the bright colors and the prints are beautiful.  While debating what to make out of this line I picked up a charm pack and thought it would make a great baby quilt.  Within a few days - I had a shower so perfect opportunity to use up the charm pack.

I did a baby patchwork using the whole pack  - added a bright orange border and the grey floral which is my favorite print and we had ourselves a baby quilt in a night!

I recently bought a new pattern Orange Peel that I haven't even downloaded yet to the right format to display on my board yet - but I am loving this design!

I am trying to decide what color is my favorite - but they all just work so well together!

The backing I used my leftover border piece and a green gingham.  Love how this Orange Peel design looks on the back!  Added some orange binding and rolled this baby up for the shower.

This was the perfect quick project and great gift idea when you have minimal time!

I have now bought fat quarters and am getting ready to cut out On a Whim by Thimble Blossoms for my next project out of High Streets.

Can't wait to get going on that one!

Client Baby Quilts

In honor of my baby - who still cries when I take him to school each day - but is fine by the time we pick him up (the teacher swears its a 5 minute thing) I wanted to share a few baby quilts.

I'm lucky enough to have worked at Pine Needles years ago before I had kids.  Holly who runs the store made this cute quilt for a family member and she's lucky I gave it back!  I fell in love!  I love these colors, the sashing fabric which looks patchworked here, but is printed.  The pattern looks fairly easy and modern or not depending on the fabrics used.  Pine Needles had this pattern kit in chevron and polka dots I think - go in and pick one up!

We chose the Chevron longarm pattern.  Every time I use this pattern - I'm blown away by the texture.
Every quilt I've used this on is so soft.  I don't know why - but the texture of the chevron softens each quilt up.  Its magical.

A pic of the back - love the row of fabric.  I need to do this more often with my quilt backs.

The next one up was such a cute quilt.  I want to go buy these fabrics and copy it EXACTLY.  I loved the navy chevron - the polka dots - the ombre fabric and the pop of yellow!  Seriously so cute.

My cute client wanted a wave type feeling - and Waverly  fit it perfectly!

And this backing!  The V and Co chevron - SO CUTE for a back.  Love this idea and want to go buy this up before I can't find it anymore!

Just a few of the cute baby quilts I've been working on this last month.

Baby Cade Big Block Quilt

Lately I have needed some quick projects to keep me sane.  I need a little something that I can complete and feel like I've accomplished something.

When I made this quilt - I had some left over HST - and I wanted to do something with them - so I made up this little block.

I was thinking table topper or a block to put on a back of quilt - I was just happy I actually used the scraps.

One day I was thumbing through Camille's new book - trying to decide what to make - and her big Churn Dash baby block was one of my favorites.  I needed a baby quilt for a gift - and was thinking I would whip that up.

The lightbulb finally went off in my head - I had a good big block - why not add a border or two and get me to baby sized?  Which was great - since I had next to no time!

So that is what I did - the fabric is actually Kona Navy not black.

I decided to practice some straight line channel lock quilting - I like how it turned out!

Backing was a soft flannel navy and bound in a blue and white gingham.

I had so much fun with this quilt - and it won't be my last big block quilt - I have now bought a little Happy Go Lucky to make the big Churn Dash block too.  Just need to find me some time now!

Benji Blanket Quilts

Been busy quilting this last month and I have a few to share.

My sister Whit came up with the Benji blanket idea about 5 years ago when Marta had her first.  The idea was a thin blanket that a baby could be swaddled in.  Sometimes quilts are just too heavy and hot for those little ones.  She wanted minky on one side and a cute fabric on the other.  We quilt them up - sans batting and bind them.  Soft and cuddly, yet thin and cool.  The perfect weight for car seats and strollers.  This is Whitney's go to baby gift and has gotten great reviews!  We lovingly refer to these types of quilts as the Benji Blanket as that is where it all started.

I'll admit I don't always love how these look initially.  Without the batting, the fabric doesn't always lay flat and you can sometimes see "puffs" from the minky.  Once its been washed up, I usually get over this, but it was hard for a quilter like me to get use to!

This one below Whit wanted for Wren's 1st birthday.  Recently I stumbled upon some chevron minky which is quickly becoming a favorite.  Whit picked out all these fabrics and I LOVE how it turned out!  The fabric front and binding are from Happy Go Lucky by Camille and Bonnie for Moda.  I love how the orange pops!  Such a fun quilt.

This next quilt was a request from Marta for a shower gift.  This baby's gender is yet to be known - so we tried to go neutral - yet keeping with the feel of the couple.  The bikes on the back with grey dot minky was perfect for them.  We picked a orange plaid for the binding to help break up some of the blue, just in case.

Love this bike fabric! Bike fabric and binding is from Lucy's Crab Shack by Sweetwater for Moda.

This next quilt may just be my most favorite Benji Blanket ever!  I used the bikes/wagon print seen on this quilt - So really how could we go wrong?

Add a little chevron navy minky....

I've never met a combo that marries together so well.  I.LOVE.HOW.THIS.TURNED.OUT.
It was a special quilt as it goes to Marta's Baby Seth how has waited almost a year for his own Benji quilt!  I'm hoping it was worth the wait!

Baby Davis Quilt

I saw this quilt a few months ago and fell in love.  I love the hounds tooth, the bold print on the back.  I thought what a perfect and classy baby quilt.  Not to babyish, stylish, still easy to throw together.

So when my cousin Kerry found out she was having a boy - I knew this would fit her and her personality perfectly.

I used navy solid and snow kona on the front.

Found this awesome Michael Miller/Sarah Jane bike/wagon print for the back.

A little channel lock quilting (don't look too close) and it was good to go.  I used the Riley Blake navy gingham for the binding.  Love how this turned out and just in time.  Finished the binding the night before the little guy was born!

This pattern will be a repeat for sure!
